This is why we have compiled a short list of what we consider to be the most relevant tips for home and business security.  We suggest purchasing the highest level security recommended by Law Enforcement and Insurance Companies.  Use the best quality locks to secure gates leading to your fire escape.  Turn off the telephone ringer when you are away from home for an extended period.  An unanswered telephone signals to intruders that no one is home. Install a 180 degree peephole in your door so you can inspect your outside entrance without opening your door.  Always ask to see the identity of someone claiming to be from the utility or telephone company, because a genuine worker will be pleased that you asked and will give you their I.D. card.  It is important to inspect the card thoroughly before allowing them entrance into your home.  Rekey all your locks immediately if you lose your keys or are broken into.  Upon moving into a new house, have new keys made because contractors and their workers may still have copies of the keys that were given to you upon moving in.  Do not under any circumstances leave a spare key outside your house as many intruders are obvious to likely hiding places. Do not mark your keys with any identification and if you have a telephone answering machine, do not leave a message that you are away from home on vacation.  Do not leave notes on your front door under any circumstances.  You can always leave a radio or TV on when you leave the house as to make the intruder think someone is there.  If you must leave a spare key outside, be creative.  Burglars routinely check under flower pots, welcome mats and window ledges for keys.
